Winter Inspection

Earlier today your steward was able to take advantage of the warmer weather to check in on our girls.

Although we didn’t have to worry about “chilling brood” (larva getting too cold) with the winter bees, we know the super frigid temps are still a stressor.

Today we just peaked in enough to make sure the wood shavings were dry and they had plenty of sugar. We saw bee activity in 4/5 hives and all 5 hives had dead bees on their porches. Contrary to how it looks, piles of dead bees just outside the hive are a positive sign that the bees are actively keeping their hive clean.

So far it looks like the girls are in good shape and using their own stores rather than the sugar.

Who else is looking forward to spring and *fingers crossed* some spring honey? 👋🏻
